You have prepared yourself for this day by replaying it time and time again in your head. You can imagine yourself walking your child to the door of the classroom and meeting the teacher for the first time. You don't know if your child will cry or if instead of your child, you cry and embarrass you both.
You may be wondering if there is a better way to prepare your child for school other than giving them that child/parent talk about telling the teacher when something goes wrong, and to not be afraid of asking questions if you become confused.
It may or may not be a surprise to you but you can help your child to be prepared for school. A child should never stop learning even when school is not in session. You should always challenge your child's mind in a way that he will learn something new everyday.
ABC's and 123's
It may seem as though it is impossible to teach your child who is between three and four years of age, how to sing their ABC's. If you practice with them every day then they will began to memorize them. You may think that if they memorizing then they won't learn to read but It has been proven that when a child as young as two, starts to remember the order in which something goes, this child will then be able to organize it even when they are out of order.
You should always make a game out of anything that you are trying to get your child to learn. Try buying a can of ABC's soup or making pancakes out of the alphabet. Have your child to repeat each one after you and then you repeat each one after your child. Start off small and in groups of four. Your child may be able to learn and memorize things easier if you break it down in a day-today basis. Try doing four alphabet letters a day and make sure that you repeat these over and over at night before bed. There was a study done that showed a person's conscience is still working even after they have fallen asleep. The same strategy goes for counting, go for four a day. If you show your child that learning can be fun then they will want to do it to.
Once your child learns their ABC's, help them learn the sounds of each one of them. Learning the sounds will later help them to put sounds and letters together to create words.
Colors and shapes
Most children learn from seeing and then doing. It is an excellent idea to try to get your children involved in your everyday activities. Children of parents who are always involved are less likely to fail in school.
Teaching colors and shapes can be a challenging task with great rewards. Pick out a color and shape each day. Try using these over and over throughout the day. Wear the color of the day and pin a shape onto your shirt. Remember children learn by seeing and doing.
When you are out and about, try pointing at different objects and saying their color and shape. Let your child have a turn doing the same with you being the observer. Always encourage your child to figure things out on their own but don't let them get to frustrated with it before lending a helping hand.
Learning their name
You don't really have to have these. In fact, some may argue that it is a waste of money. I personally feel that if you are going to buy them toys then why not buy them toys that are going to help educated their mind. The modern technology that is put into toys is so amazing. Educational movies are also another one of my favorites. These movies help teach your child anything from learning basic letters to speak in Spanish. Like I said before, you don't have to have these for your child but they are a nice treasure to have.
Reading to your child
There are huge benefits to reading to your child. One of the benefits to reading to your child is that your child will be able to see what letters look like when they are put together. Another great benefit is that your child will learn to love books and in return love reading and writing. Try picking out books with pictures in it, as your are reading to your child you should take a moment to go over what is happening and what the characters in the story names are. You should also point to the pictures and explain each one of the items.
When your child has learned his ABC's and name, try to get your child to sound out the words in a book. Sounding out words will show your child that their is different sounds to each word and that just because they look one way doesn't necessarily mean that this is the way it sounds. Be patient with your child and only help when your child seems to be struggling too much or ask for help.
You should never push learning so hard on a child that they have no time or room for anything else. You want your child to be a child while learning. It is best to limit serious studying to about thirty minutes each day and may even help if you break these sessions up throughout the day. You can help your child to prepare for school by teaching them the basics without boring them or making them frustrated.
You should always try to make learning a whole new game that is fun to play over and over.
